Beethoven was the true master of the String Quartet, setting standards which nobody ever surpassed. No wonder that his string trios (for violin, viola and cello) suffer a somewhat overshadowed existence. Totally undeserved, as these works are delightful compositions, showing the young Beethoven in all his craftsmanship and genius.
Few complete recordings of the complete string trios exist, therefore a most welcome issue. Excellent performances by the Zurich String Trio, of whom the famous conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt said: “I always hugely enjoy listening to them”.
